The escalator is a combination of a special-structured chain conveyor and two special-structured belt conveyors to transport a continuous conveyor between the different heights of the building. The inclination angle α of the escalator should not be greater than 30°. When the lifting height does not exceed 6 m and the rated speed does not exceed 0.50 m/s, the inclination angle α is allowed to increase to 35°. The name, model number and a serial number of the manufacturer are indicated on the escalator or moving walkway at least at the entrance and exit.
A series of steps are connected with two traction chains and run on the guide rails arranged on a certain line to form an escalator ladder. The traction chain bypasses the upper traction sprocket, the lower tensioning device and forms a closed loop through a plurality of straight lines and curved sections of the upper and lower branches. The individual steps (ie, the ladders) in the upper branch of this loop should be kept strictly horizontal for the passengers to stand. The upper traction sprocket (that is, the main shaft) is connected to the motor through a reducer or the like to obtain power. Armrests running synchronously with the ladders are installed on both sides of the escalator for passenger handrails. The armrest device is also driven by the above motor. Since the escalator is continuously operated, it is necessary to transport a large number of people in a short period of time in public places, shops, stations, airports, terminals, buildings and underground railway stations where people flow, and the use of escalators is more intermittent. The public transportation escalator has a weekly running time of about 140h, and it should be no less than 0.5h during any 3h interval and its load should reach 100% of the specified braking load. Therefore, the escalator is particularly required to be durable.
The development trend of the escalator is: compact structure, reducing the space occupied; reducing the weight of the equipment; reducing the resistance and saving energy; the appearance is beautiful, and can be used for the decoration of the building; the operation is stable and the noise is reduced.
The moving walkway is also a continuous conveying machine for the carrier. It differs from the escalator in that the moving road surface is not a stepped ladder but a flat road. The moving walkway is mainly used for conveying, and can also be inclined at a certain angle (α=12°). The same applies to public places where people are concentrated.
